Can You Mix RAM?
Of course, you can mix RAM. It is easily possible. But, a common misconception is that the size of the new RAM should be the same as the size of the old one. That’s not true. If you have 4 GB RAM, you can go ahead and add an 8 GB RAM in the second slot. Almost all computers have 2 slots by default.
When you do this, you will move to a dual-channel mode that is commonly dubbed as flex mode. The computer will utilize 4 GB from the new RAM and 4 GB from the old one. The remaining 4 GB will be on the single-channel mode only. This alone may not perform amazingly, but your computer’s overall performance will be significantly better than it was before.
Here, please remember not to apply this to frequency. Both RAMs must be on the same frequency. If you use different frequencies, the computer will run on the lower frequency of the two.
Can You Use 2 Different Brands of RAM?
The answer is yes again, but here, things are not as straightforward or simple. While theoretically, you will not have any problems mixing RAM brands, you may face compatibility issues. So, to start off with, we recommend that you check compatibility before going for it. Also, all specifications must ideally be the same.
Now, despite being careful, there may be problems related to memory. A few times, you may also have problems during booting. This is because even though the main specs are the same, modules may be different. Instability and low performance are some other common problems.
